 Chapada Diamantina - History

The National Park of Chapada Diamantina was created in 1985 to motivate the local tourism and to keep the natural resources from Serra do Sincorá and from the extensive plateau where it is located. It includes an area of 152 thousand hectare, more or less the size of Netherland, with highs of 2030 meters. Located on the inside of the State of Bahia, the park stays about 400 kilometers from the coastline.

About 600 million years ago, the local was covered by the ocean. That’s when a tectonic clash created the montainous landscape that is seen nowadays. At Chapada, almost all the rivers from Paraguaçu, Jacuípe and Rio de Contas basin springs, that’s why all the main atractions from the place are the waterfalls and the natural pools.

The vegetation from the place is very rich, and blends plain forests and savana hills at the river’s edge. Countless species of flowers, like orchids, and vine are seen all the year. The animals that lives there are capivaras, cotias and big mammals like jaguars.
