Manaus is practically isolated from the rest of Brazil. In Manaus, there are
very few roads or railways and the easiest way to get there is by plane or boat. So much isolation, however, was not able to stop its
development. Located in the center of the region that is covered by the dense Amazonic forest, Manaus surprises everybody by being an
urbanized and modern city and represents the largest economic center of the northern region.
These contrast included Manaus in the route of the most visited cities of
the country, mainly by those who want to take ecotuorism tours. The tourist attractions of the city are urban and the suggestion for
those who are interested in getting to know the aspects of the tropical forest is that you take the famous boat rides along the rivers of
the region.
In Manaus, the season is not important. It is hot all year long, even in the
winter and that is why the climate is divided into two seasons: rainy and not rainy. In the rainy season, from December to May, it rains
almost daily and the temperature fall quite a bit at night. When the rain gives a truce, in the other months of the year, the temperature
goes up even more and can reach 40º C.
The best period to visit the region is between the months of June to September,
when the rains is not so intense and the rides are more worth while. The more adventurous can rent small boats and ride through the
"Igapós", that is how they call the flooded parts of the forest. However, the advice is always to go with a tour guide preferably
those that have a certificate and training in survival in the forest.
The choice of the hotel is important for your trip to be pleasant. In Manaus,
the tourist can choose to stay on the city or in the "jungle hotels" which are really in the Amazonic forest at a distance
calculated in hours in a boat. Most of the hotels that are in the forest are vary high class and the installation offer as much comfort to
the tourist as the ones located in the downtown. It is a pleasant way to get to know the Amazon without losing the commodities of the urban
life.
Ecoturism, contact with the nature and historical monuments is very interesting
but there are no tourists that don't take souvenirs from the city made in the Zona Franca of Manaus. SInce the 60's, Manaus has a free
business area to incentivate investiments in the region by the liberation of import and export taxes. The result is several stores selling
imported and nationals products, produced in the Zona Franca, competing with the handicraft produced in the region.
There is no doubt about it, Manaus is a very interesting city and deserves a
visit. By the way, when you pack your suitcase, don't forget to take a repellent, one of the most important items in the baggage of the
tourist when he arrives in the city. |
